Delegates from the 22 of the 31 STYSA Member Associations attended the 2008 Winter Governing Board Meeting in Round Rock the weekend of February 1-3, 2008.

 

A series of workshops on Saturday offered delegates an opportunity to gather information on a variety of topics related to the management of local leagues - registration, financial responsibility of non-profit organizations, risk management, disciplinary hearing management and insurance, to name a few.  Sessions to discuss proposed rule changes and the 2008-2009 budget were also held to answer any questions prior to being asked to vote on these issues Sunday morning. 

 

District meetings were held late Saturday afternoon to discuss plans for the spring competitions and prepare for next fall. Both District Vice President positions were up for re-election at this meeting and, since only delegates from each District vote in this election, the election are held during the individual District meetings.  Both Chuck Jeffords and Keith Walker were re-elected to their positions.

 

Saturday evening’s Awards/Hall of Honor dinner honored several individuals identified as deserving of special recognition for their achievements. Awards were presented to:

• adidas 2007 Coach of the Year – Ross Schumacher of Bay City (Brazosport YSA)
• Rock Sports 2007 Male Youth Referee of the Year – Curtis Landrum of Spring (Timberline)
• Rock Sports 2007 Female Youth Referee of the Year – Korey Schroeder of Victoria (Victoria YSO)
• Neurology Associates’ Scholar Athlete of the Year – Michael Torre of Houston (Bay Area)
• STYSA Volunteer of the Year – Doris Sutherland of Beeville (Bee Live Oak YSA)
• Hall of Fame Inductee – Dr. Eric Pappert, San Antonio

 

The Governing Board Meeting convened at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning to address a lengthy agenda that included a review of the state’s current financial status, the proposed budget for 2008-2009, fourteen proposed rule changes, and status reports from officers and committee chairs. Once the general business was concluded, elections were held for three positions on the Executive Committee.  (See separate article for results of proposed rule changes.)
